Summer Gods Tour with Third Eye Blind & Yellowcard Live in Tampa

For the 4th installment of the Summer Gods tour, Third Eye Blind teamed up with Yellowcard and Arizona to bring a memorable show to the Midflorida Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa, FL on July 25th. Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins told the crowd that even though the new 3EB album isn’t finished as planned, the Summer Gods tour has the band playing some of the largest amphitheaters across the nation and in their career. The band has become a fixture of the summer concert circuit, and this year’s tour introduces some surprises and changes to the setlist nightly.

Yellowcard hit the stage first with a setlist that was much different than the 20th anniversary tour for Ocean Avenue last summer. They didn’t completely ignore the hits, opening with “Lights and Sounds” and including “Only One” and “Ocean Avenue”, but everything in between was a mix of deep cuts and songs they hadn’t played in forever. Some deep cuts included songs on the album “Lift a Sail” which frontman Ryan Key reminded the crowd was turning 10 this year.

And the Yellowcard fans came out in full force, with a lot of fans losing their mind hearing such a varied setlist with tracks like “Southern Air” and “One Bedroom”. Yellowcard ended up playing something from every album in their 12 song set. You could see how much fun the band was having playing songs they haven’t performed live ever, or in at least 10 years!

Third Eye Blind hit the stage a little after 9pm to an enthusiastic crowd. 3EB is the quintessential band of the 90s with their self titled debut album that has a bevy of hits on it. The band started off huddled together at the back of the stage for “Motorcycle Drive By”. Stephan Jenkins is always comfortable in the spotlight and is known for his on stage banter. And while the new album isn’t out yet, there were a lot of surprises like adding a quick jam of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” during “Dust Storm”.

Third Eye Blind played some of the classics off the debut album like “Graduate” and “Losing a Whole Year” and some deeper cuts before switching to a unique acoustic set. They did some songs from Out of the Vein and even threw in “The Background” from their first album. And for the first time this tour, Stephan invited Yellowcard singer Ryan Key back to the stage to sing “The Background” which sounded amazing. Another impressive deep cut performed during the acoustic set was “Bonfire” from the album “Ursa Major” which is a fan favorite among the die-hard 3EB fans. They wrapped things up with the hits “Jumper”, “Semi-Charmed Life”, and “How’s it Going to Be” with the fans in a frenzy singing every word loud.

Yellowcard and Third Eye Blind’s hit songs may have been “overplayed” on radio throughout the years, but hearing the songs live in 2024 never gets old. Both bands are rock legends in their own right, and if anything, are even better live now. Putting both bands together for Summer Gods 2024 is a match made in concert heaven.
