Jelly Roll Performs a Free Surprise Show in Tampa

Just a little over two hours before the concert was supposed to begin, headliner Morgan Wallen called off Friday’s show at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. He stated, “I hate to reschedule shows but I powered through being sick in Tampa Thursday night, and unfortunately woke up feeling way worse today.”

This news was disappointing for Samantha Curd, who had just arrived from Ohio with her baby and fiancé. “[My fiancé] forgot his ID,” she said. “We had to rush back. We didn’t get to the gate until we were boarding at 11:45 and we have a four-and-a-half-month-old, so it was hectic,” Curd continued.

Then they found out the concert was canceled. “Crazy, I wanted to puke,” she said. “It’s so sad.” Curd traveled to see Wallen with her cousin Christina Rose, who had been saving money for months for the tickets and an Airbnb to celebrate her 45th birthday. “If he really doesn’t feel well, that’s fine, but you can’t wait two hours before the concert to tell people,” Rose said.

However, the party didn’t stop thanks to Jelly Roll, the country music artist who was set to open for Wallen. Jelly Roll has achieved rock star success and could sell out a place like Amalie Arena as a headliner, but instead, put on an intimate show at the Dallas Bull for free.

He posted on social media, “TAMPA! Dallas Bull tonight— doors open at 7 p.m. If you have a ticket to the show you get in for free. (This is for ticket holders only) FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.”

Thousands of fans started heading to the Dallas Bull. Traffic was at a standstill. People were paying drivers to cut in front of them on US 301. Several deputies came to the bar to monitor the situation. One of the Dallas Bull’s owners, Jose Romero, described the scene as crazy but added, “this is what we live for, country music at its best.”

“It was kind of chaotic because our staff was stuck in traffic and we’re trying to get them here,” Romero said. “I’m telling them, ‘We’ll get your cars later, just park on the side and walk to the venue.’”

“They were all stuck, but it’s exciting,” he added. “This is what we live for, so they’re all hyped that we got this going.”

Jelly Roll saved the day and played to a packed house of around 2000 lucky fans. Among the crowd was the one and only Hulk Hogan, along with Tampa Bay Lightning players Alex Killorn and Nick Paul.  The crowd was in a frenzy and Jelly Roll vouched that Morgan Wallen was so sick, that he told him to cancel the show the day before!
