Common Kings Concert in Clearwater, FL

The Common King brought a night full of island vibes and feel-good tunes to Clearwater, FL on August 3rd. The live show was at the picturesque new venue called The BayCare Sound which is right on the water.  It was the perfect place for the tour that included headliners Dirty Heads, Slightly Stoopid, and The Elovators. The Common Kings name is derived from the heritage and homelands of Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga but was formed in Orange County, California. They had the crowd on their feet dancing, singing, and feeling the love from start to finish. Their live show is a unique fusion of reggae, R&B, rock, and island flavor that they’ve perfected over the years since their Grammy-nominated debut album “Lost in Paradise” was released back in 2017.

One of the more unique things about Common Kings is how they blend different styles of music. Sure, they’ve got that laid-back island vibe, but they’re not afraid to throw in some R&B smoothness or pop catchiness. It’s no wonder they’ve toured with big names like Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars – these guys know how to put on a show that appeals to anyone, regardless of the genre. The band’s positive energy was infectious. Between songs, they’d chat with the crowd spreading messages of love and unity. They made the 9,000 seat capacity BayCare Sound amphitheater feel intimate with everyone there to have a good time and lift each other up. Songs like “Wade in the Water” and “Lost in Paradise” were highlights of the setlist with the fans in a frenzy singing along.

It was my first time seeing the Common Kings, and they surpassed any expectations by a long shot with an engaging setlist of their hits and even some covers. They surprised us with some awesome medleys fused into the set that got everyone singing along. Everything from Sublime’s classics like “Garden Grove” and “What I Got”which is perfect for that SoCal reggae-rock vibe and even some Snoop Dogg! They performed a cover of Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” that got the crowd going and proved that good reggae never goes out of style. It was like a musical journey through different eras and styles, all with that Common Kings twist to make it their own. The Common Kings ended their set with “No Other Love” and some of us fans wondered if they would be back for one more song.  Their setlist of about a dozen songs went by so quickly!
