18 Songs, One and a Half Years in the Making
When singles started rolling out last year, most listeners assumed the eventual album would clock in at a tidy 10 to 12 tracks. Brent Smith had other ideas. “It’s essentially a double album, ’cause it’s 18 songs. I think a lot of people felt like when we were releasing the singles last year that, ‘Hey, when they announce the record, it’ll probably be 10 songs, maybe 12.’ But it’s 18 in total.”
The sheer scale of the project reflects how much time and emotional investment went into it. Smith described a lengthy creative process shaped by real life pressing in from all sides: “This particular record was a year and a half in the making. The songwriting — we really pushed ourselves this time around. There was a lot going on in the band’s life, and there was a lot to talk about.”
Much of the production credit goes to bassist Eric Bass, who helmed the record for the third consecutive time. Smith was effusive about what that means for the band: “Having a bandmember that has this kind of a skillset is not the norm, which we’re very blessed that we have him. But he went to the wall on this one. He worked really, really hard.”
Why They Named It Ei8ht
Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one. Speaking separately with Audacy Music’s Katie & Company, Smith explained the straightforward logic behind the title: “The record’s called ‘Ei8ht’. Yes, it’s the eighth studio album. It made sense to call it ‘Ei8ht’. It asked to be called ‘Ei8ht’. We tried all these other ethereal names and put them in and we were trying to be clever, and we were, like, ‘No, let’s just call it ‘Ei8ht’.”

Not a Concept Album — And That’s the Point
After back-to-back conceptual records, the band made a conscious decision to break the mold. Zach Myers explained the thinking: “We just did two cinematically themed concept records, so it was, like, ‘How do we get away from doing another concept?’ But it is a group of songs that belong together on one body of work, which feels great. And, again, it didn’t feel like we had to thematically stick to anything. And when you don’t have a lane you have to stay in, that’s always kind of nice.”
Smith echoed that sentiment, describing Ei8ht as a return to form: “None of the songs are related to each other, but they exist on the same body of work, but they all are their own entity. So it’s a traditional record, and I love saying that… there’s such a broad array of styles on this record — it’s very much us, but it’s a rollercoaster ride.”
A Tribute to Brad Arnold and the Wisdom of Perspective
Reflecting on the four-year gap since 2022’s Planet Zero, Smith offered a heartfelt tribute to a late friend and mentor. He credited 3 Doors Down frontman Brad Arnold — who recently passed away — with shaping how he thinks about the album-making process: “He goes, ‘Son, you’re going to have your entire life to do your first record, and if it’s successful, you’re gonna have six months to do your next one.’ And he was a hundred percent right.” Smith described the journey from initial writing sessions to finished product as “quite extraordinary” for the band.

The ‘Dance, Kid, Dance Act II’ World Tour
The album announcement arrives alongside one of the band’s most ambitious touring plans to date. The “Dance, Kid, Dance Act II” world tour spans 54 dates across 11 countries, hitting major venues throughout North America and Europe. Support acts vary by date and include Coheed and Cambria, Black Stone Cherry, From Ashes to New, DJ Rock Feed, and Those Damn Crows.
Shinedown’s Lunatic Ball Beach Weekend
Beyond the tour, Shinedown is debuting their first-ever curated festival: Shinedown’s Lunatic Ball Beach Weekend, running October 23–25, 2026 in Miramar Beach, Florida. The three-day coastal event features two unique Shinedown headlining sets alongside performances from Bush, Hanson, Flyleaf (with Lacey Sturm), Living Colour, From Ashes to New, Guardians of the Jukebox, Neon Mooners, and more.
Chart Records and Award Recognition
The lead-up to Ei8ht has been anything but quiet. Over the past year, Shinedown released four singles — “Dance, Kid, Dance,” “Killing Fields,” “Three Six Five,” and “Searchlight” — with the first two reaching No. 1 at rock radio. “Three Six Five” went even further, topping Alternative radio while cracking the Top 10 at Hot AC and AC, and landing in the Top 20 at Top 40.
Those results pushed Shinedown’s record-setting totals even higher: 21 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and 23 No. 1s on Mediabase’s Active Rock chart — both all-time records. The band is also nominated at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards for Rock Artist of the Year, Duo/Group of the Year, and Rock Song of the Year for “Dance, Kid, Dance.” It follows their sweep at the 2025 ceremony, where they took home both Rock Artist of the Year and Rock Song of the Year for “A Symptom of Being Human” — their second consecutive year earning top genre honors.
