Gene Spills the Tea on Solo Touring

In a December 2024 chat on Billboard’s “Behind The Setlist” podcast, Gene dished on life after KISS’s “End Of The Road” tour. “I thought I could stay away from the stage,” he admitted before waxing poetic about the electric buzz of performing. “It’s a feeling, and it’s tough to talk about feelings,” he said, likening it to scream therapy: “You go in there and you just let loose and reportedly — I was never part of that, but reportedly — people would come out drenched in sweat and relieved and tired and you expel all this stuff.” Onstage, he explained, “You are free. You just expel all this energy, and it’s this celebration of life with the fans and you.”

With GENE SIMMONS BAND, it’s all about raw fun—no managers, no massive crew, just local promoters providing the gear. “Fans can yell, ‘Hey, why don’t you do ‘Almost Human’ from 1804?’ You betcha. And you break into it,” he said, embracing the spontaneity.

The No-Frills Touring Philosophy

How’d this stripped-down approach start? Gene tipped his hat to the Chitlin’ Circuit pioneers like Chuck Berry, who’d roll up with a guitar and a local band on standby. “Now, I don’t do that — I take my band with me — but Berry would show up, and he’d tell the guys, ‘Study the records, learn these songs, I’m gonna show up,’ and no rehearsal, nothing,” he explained. “It’s very easy. We have a lot of fun. The fans are, as they say on the street, digging it. And then you die. That’s all there is.”

More Cash, Less Flash

Financially, Gene’s solo gigs outshine his KISS days. “I make more [with my solo band],” he revealed. “There’s no managers, no private jets, no 20 tractor trailers… The pyro alone for every [KISS] show was 10 grand, sometimes 50.” Now, it’s like “you decided to rent some amps in a garage and plug in and then everybody from the neighborhood comes in.” Informal? Yes. A blast? Absolutely.

Meet the Band

Joining Gene are guitarists Brent Woods (WILDSIDE, SEBASTIAN BACH) and Zach Throne (COREY TAYLOR), plus drummer Brian Tichy (WHITESNAKE, BILLY IDOL). This isn’t their first rodeo—earlier lineups from 2017-18 featured Jeremy Asbrock, Ryan Cook, Phil Shouse, and Brent Fitz, rocking smaller venues with a fan-first vibe.

A Solo Journey Born From Spontaneity

Back in 2018, Gene told Australia’s Advertiser, “The GENE SIMMONS BAND was not a plan or anything.” It sparked from a corporate gig where he was roped into performing. “They said, ‘Well, we’ll pay you X dollars more,’ and I said, ‘I like you!’” A Nashville crew learned his picks on the fly, and the rest is history. “It just sounded natural — there is such a thing called chemistry.”
