Foo Fighters Josh Freese Honors Taylor Hawkins

Josh Freese has celebrated his first year with the Foo Fighters by honoring the late Taylor Hawkins, the legendary one of a kind drummer. On May 21, 2023, during a livestream event titled Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts, the band introduced their new drummer. The reveal featured lighthearted conversations with several renowned drummers, including Tommy Lee of Motley Crue and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, before officially announcing Freese as the latest addition.

The lighthearted nature of the announcement stood in stark contrast to the somber circumstances surrounding it. Hawkins, who had been a part of the Foo Fighters for 25 years, unexpectedly passed away on March 25, 2022, while the band was gearing up for a performance in Bogota, Colombia. To honor Hawkins, two star-studded tribute concerts were held, with Freese participating in both.

In an Instagram post, Freese reflected on his first year with the band. “A year ago today this aired,” Freese wrote, alongside clips from the livestream event, “and I got to stop keeping quiet about what had been referred to as ‘the worst kept secret in the music business’ at the time (though I thought we did a pretty good job on our end).”

“I love the way it came out and am proud of it,” Freese continued. “I joked that all we really needed was ‘All My Life’ and then move on (because it’s so goddamn good.) That being said, I continue to miss Taylor as does the band, his family, friends, and the rest of the world. We also continue to try and make the most of the situation by moving forward and doing what we love doing… playing music, honoring Taylor, and staying positive.”

During his first year with the Foo Fighters, Freese has stayed busy with the group performing nearly 70 shows. The band has a busy summer ahead, with concerts scheduled across the U.K. and Europe before returning to the U.S. for a series of performances starting in July.
